WebRoots Preface
Alvar Nuñez joined the 1526 Pámfilo de Narvaez expedition to Florida, as
treasurer. Alvar, two other Spaniards and an Arab Moor, were the only
survivors. For eight years they roamed along the coasts of Louisiana and
Texas. Alvar became a well-known medicine man among the native Indians.
They reached the Pacific coast in Sonora, Mexico, after nine years, the
first Europeans to travel across the North American continent arriving at
the city of Mexico in 1536. His narrative was first published at Zamora in
1542 under the title of "Naufragios."
