Introduction
About one hundred community histories were published by the West Virginia
University Agricultural Extension Division in Morgantown, in the 1920s and
30s. Fifty-eight of those histories are known to exist today [2002] and
are at the West Virginia State Archives library. If you know of one of
these histories that isn't published here, please let us know about it.
Wanting to make an effort to focus the attention of outside agencies on
rural communities, the Agricultural Extension Division, in October 1921,
developed a county community score card, listing specific standards or
goals under nine headings--history, government, business, farm, clubs,
homes, schools, churches and health--these histories are a result.
